Chicanos Por La Causa Founder And Advocate Terri Cruz Dies

Terri Cruz, a founding member of Chicanos Por La Causa, the largest Hispanic nonprofit in the country, has died. She was 89.

Cruz has a long history as a community advocate and activist.

Chicanos Por La Causa announced the passing of Terri Cruz on its Facebook page. In a statement, CPLC’s president and CEO David Adame said, “Cruz committed herself to serving the community … to the very end she pressed on fighting for all who were marginalized.”

Cruz has been described as a trailblazer and the “mother” of the CPLC. Chicanos Por La Causa was formed in the 1960s.

In an interview with KJZZ in 2015, Cruz talked about how she and other women in the community cooked meals as people gathered before a rally or a march in those early days. Cruz has received national recognition along with many honors throughout her life.

KJZZ senior field correspondent Kathy Ritchie has 20 years of experience reporting and writing stories for national and local media outlets — nearly a decade of it has been spent in public media.
