Redevelopment Of Phoenix Chinese Cultural Center Spurs Protests

You’ve probably see Phoenix Chinese Cultural Center as you drive by 44th and Van Buren streets. The iconic center has been part of the Phoenix landscape since the 1990s. The space houses a grocery store, restaurants and small businesses — and now, many empty storefronts.

In June, True North Companies purchased the site. Chief Executive Officer David Tedesco recently told The Arizona Republic that they plan to use the site as a corporate headquarters.

The redevelopment has spurred concern among Chinese-American residents in the Valley. They staged a protest the last two Sundays. Frank Zhang is the president of the Arizona Asian Alliance, and he joins us now to talk about the Chinese Cultural Center.
