The ACLU of Arizona said Phoenix police used excessive crowd-control methods after Tuesday’s protest turned unruly following a rally by President Donald Trump.
Phoenix Police said officers were attacked with rocks and bottles, and responded with flash bang grenades and pepper balls.
The ACLU is demanding an independent investigation. Alessandra Soler is the organization’s executive director.
"I think the issue is, they responded in an unnecessary and dangerous way and they exposed dozens and dozens of bystanders who were there to peacefully protest to very dangerous chemical agents," Soler said.
Soler said police should have chosen another way to de-escalate the situation.
A police spokesman said they are investigating.
