Supporters of Arizona’s expanded school voucher program have filed a second lawsuit in Maricopa County Superior Court. It contends there are irregularities with the petitions turned in by opponents, which could put the new law on hold until the 2018 election.
Attorney Kory Langhofer cites nearly four dozen situations where he said they do not comply with the law.
"It's important when someone wants to send something to all the voters of the state and bypass this representational process that's presumptively proper, that we make them do it right. They don't just get to press a button or yell at their TV to get an issue onto the statewide ballot," Langhofer said.
Opponents of the program, which will use tax dollars to pay for private and parochial education, said it diverts dollars that would otherwise go to underfunded public schools.
Supporters already have another lawsuit pending, filed right after opponents of voucher expansion submitted more than 110,000 signatures. The first lawsuit stems from the validity of the petition drive.
