$10 Million Grant Awarded To HIV Organizations In Maricopa, Pinal Counties

People with HIV in Maricopa and Pinal counties will receive more medical care, counseling, nutrition services and transportation under a new $10 million federal grant.

The funding will go to community organizations under a Ryan White program designed to help the 4,500 people living with HIV in the Phoenix metro area and Pinal County.

“Our request this year is about 5 percent more than last year, but every year we ask for a little bit more because the number of people living with HIV and AIDS in our community has gone up every year,” said Rose Conner, a manager for the program.

The Ryan White Program has been helping the HIV community since the 1990s and is named after the 13-year-old boy who made national headlines after he contracted the virus through a blood transfusion.

Ashley Carter was an intern at KJZZ in 2017 and 2018.
