The skeleton of a luxury hotel loomed near the intersection of Loop 101 and 202 for the better part of a decade.
Now the 25-acre parcel is home to a hotel, apartments, a restaurant and, coming soon, a 6-story office building.
With a few shovels full of dirt, the ground was officially broken on the capstone of Chandler Viridian on Tuesday morning.
“The surrounding amenity base, the access to the freeway, the great workforce in Chandler, in the southeast valley, lots of educated folks here, so we really saw this as a place where employers wanted to be and where we thought we could really add value,” said Hines Managing Director Chris Anderson, who developed the project.
The site was formerly home to Elevation Chandler, a partially built hotel abandoned in 2006.
Hines demolished the remnants in November 2014 and began to build again.
City Council Member Terry Roe said Chandler does its best to lay the foundation for new development with strong roads, schools and infrastructure.
“These folks have done what they said they would do and we are happy to be here and to be part of that today,” Roe said.
The first tenants, architectural and engineering firm Stantec are expected to move into their new offices in January 2019.
