Last year, the website FiveThirtyEight introduced an interactive database showing the causes of Gun Deaths in America — all 33,000 of them annually.
With the news of the worst mass shooting in modern American history still unfolding out of Las Vegas, it can be difficult to remember that guns take many more lives in many more ways each day.
Maggie Koerth-Baker is a senior science reporter for FiveThirtyEight, and her most recent article looks at gun violence with a broader lens and, she says, mass shootings are a bad way to understand American gun violence.
