An immigrant rights group is speaking out against Wednesday’s dismissal of the case against former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
A federal judge has now upheld President Trump’s pardon of Arpaio for criminal contempt of court charges.
But Tony Navarrete of the group Promise Arizona still considers Arapio to be guilty of racial profiling, and said many people in the immigrant and Latino community feel the same.
“The fact that he was convicted of racial profiling. The fact Maricopa County voters and Maricopa County families had to pay his legal bills over and over and over again – people are not going to forget that,” Narvarrete said.
He described Arpaio as a former elected official “whose legacy really is of corruption, whose legacy is of going after the most vulnerable communities. You know, his legacy is a failed legacy of what leadership and law enforcement should not be.”
He said the people Arpaio harmed with his illegal immigrant patrols will not see justice. This summer, Arpaio was convicted of criminal contempt of court for failing to halt those patrols.
The president pardoned him a month later.
