While the NRA digs in against banning bump stocks, Tucson City Councilman Steve Kozachik is moving forward with a proposal to ban the device that allowed a semi-automatic weapon fire nearly as fast as a fully automatic one in Las Vegas last week.
“Regulating these things is not sufficient, they need to be banned,” said Kozachik. “There is no legitimate civilian use for these gadgets, and they just need to be taken out of circulation.”
He said he’s aware state sovereignty laws recently reversed Tucson’s gun buyback program, but in light of one man using a bump stock to kill 58 people, he said he sees no better time than now.
“There is no state law on this. And, so while the state is silent, it would be difficult for them to make the argument that what we’re doing is more stringent than something they haven’t even addressed.”
Councilors will meet October 24th to discuss outlawing the sale, manufacturing and possession of bump stocks anywhere within Tucson’s city limits.
