The City Council of El Mirage has voted to fire City Manager Spencer Isom by a vote of 4 to 2.

Doug Jones, President of the El Mirage Police Employees Association, said there was a “positive culture” before Isom’s tenure. “Now that we have that change in the works, our hope is that we can once again start that culture,” he said.

It was the "no" votes, including El Mirage Mayor Lana Mook, that proposed holding the vote in the first place. In a note to the council, Mook gave a long list of Isom’s accomplishments, and blamed the police and fire unions in El Mirage for efforts to “disparage” him. If council members wanted Isom gone, Mook wrote, this vote was their opportunity.

As severance, Isom will get nine months’ salary, benefits and all accrued vacation, a payment of about $223,000.
