A veteran committed suicide Friday morning on the grounds of the Phoenix VA. His name is being withheld, but the Associated Press reports he was 33 years old.
The Phoenix Police Department is investigating the suicide, which took place in a secluded area outside of the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center. No one else was injured.
Two years ago, a veteran killed himself in the parking lot of another VA office in Phoenix. According to Arizona State University, the suicide rate among Arizona veterans is nearly 22 per 100,000 people —more than three times the rate of non-veterans.
