Where you live can determine how well you age, and some cities are more age friendly than others.
In the 2017 edition of "Where We Live: Communities for All Ages," AARP highlights several U.S. cities, including a handful in Arizona, that are addressing the needs of an aging population.
So what makes a place livable? A lot of jobs, affordable housing, entertainment, transit and community engagement are some factors.
Nancy LeaMond is the executive vice president and chief advocacy and engagement officer at AARP.
She said Scottsdale and Fountain Hills made the cut because, "We were very interested in the program they call lockboxes for seniors where they provide, particularly for low income residents, a lock box so that first responders can get into people’s homes in the case of an emergency without having to knock down the door."
The City of Maricopa was also mentioned in the book for a leadership program that encourages residents to get involved in local government.
AARP also highlighted Tempe for its membership in the Dementia Friendly America network.
