Entrepreneurs See Opportunity In Disaster Areas

It’s been a month since Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, and still, most residents don’t yet have power back, cell service is spotty and bottled water can be tough to come by.

President Trump rates the federal government’s response to the disaster as a 10 out of 10, although polling suggests Americans would give a lower grade.

We have two perspectives on disaster relief and recovery this morning, starting with Sandy Schneider. She’s a political science professor at Michigan State University and says there’s been increased tension over the past few years about federal spending overall, which includes spending on disaster relief.

When disasters strike, there are a lot of needs for residents in those areas. And, entrepreneurs often see those needs as opportunities. Nezih Altay is an associate professor at DePaul University and studies humanitarian supply chains, among other things. He joins me via Skype.
