Jurors Shown Body-Cam Video In Mesa Police Shooting Trial

The murder trial continues of a former Mesa police officer charged with killing an unarmed man last year. Jurors were shown body-camera footage Thursday, marking the first time the video has been shown in the public.

The video aired in the case against former Officer Philip Brailsford shows Daniel Shaver lying facedown in a hallway outside his Mesa hotel room.

It’s after police responded to a call that someone was pointing a gun out a window.

Brailsford opened fire when Shaver, who had been ordered to crawl toward officers, reached toward the waistband of his shorts. He did not have a weapon.

The judge in the case barred news organizations from broadcasting the shooting video, agreeing with Brailsford’s attorney that it could hurt his right to a fair trial.

If convicted of second-degree murder, Brailsford could face 10 to 25 years in prison.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
