Customs and Border Protection wants to know whether it can draw long lines of traffic away from downtown over to the modernized Mariposa shipping port of entry.
"There’s a lot more space and we’re able to move traffic a lot faster through Mariposa if they start using that port of entry," CBP spokeswoman Marcia Armendariz said.
The agency will open extra lanes at the newer port from 6 to 8 a.m. to keep the flow moving.
