SCOTUS Cake Case Is Ongoing Battle Between Religious Freedom And Discrimination

Later this year, the U.S. Supreme Court will consider the case of Masterpiece Cakeshops Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission.

The suit involves a same-sex couple who wanted to have Masterpiece Cakeshop in Lakewood, Colorado, make a cake for their wedding reception. But the bakery’s owner declined, saying he only made cakes for heterosexual weddings.

At the core of the case is the ongoing battle between those who think it’s about religious freedom and those who believe it’s about discrimination.

Chad Flanders is a professor at the St. Louis University School of Law.
