Mexican Journalist To Be Honored For Risky Work

Patricia Mayorga was forced to flee northern Mexico after the murder of a colleague last spring. Now she’ll be honored with the Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Mayorga works for the investigative news magazine Proceso. She’s reported on human rights abuses, ties between Mexico’s ruling elite and organized crime and helps train young journalists in a country where so many have been killed for doing their job.

Joel Simon is executive director of the Committee to Protect Journalists.

"In some ways what Patricia is trying to do in Mexico is ordinary journalism but ordinary journalism has turned deadly," he said.

Other recipients to be honored are reporters from Cameroon, Thailand and Yemen.

Fronteras Desk senior editor Michel Marizco is an award-winning investigative reporter based in Flagstaff.
