Telepsychology Helps Reduce Stigma Of Seeking Behavioral Counseling

When it comes to accessing health care, Arizona has updated its telehealth laws in the past year to allow providers to better serve patients in rural areas. This includes laws that cover telebehavioral health.

The stigma of seeking traditional face-to-face mental health counseling is often strong for those struggling with a variety of issues.

Dr. Robb Leigh, chief medical officer and emergency physician at Akos, a Phoenix-based telemedicine provider, said telepsychology might be a valuable treatment component, especially for those living in rural Arizona.

“This will really bridge the gap between the need that the population has and the providers that are available through telemedicine platforms so they can provide confidential and HIPAA-compliant consultations," Leigh said.

Leigh said even for those who live in more populated cities, the time commitment devoted to participating in traditional behavioral counseling can also be reduced by utilizing telepsychology.
