A large employer in Phoenix plans to get bigger over the next three years. USAA wants to add up to 1,000 employees to its campus near Interstate 17 and Happy Valley Road.
Right now, more than 4,000 people work at USAA’s contact center in north Phoenix, mainly helping members with financial products like insurance, loans and investments.
The company’s technology professionals are mostly in San Antonio and Plano, Texas, where they’ll continue to grow, but Mike Pansini, vice president of applications development, said, “The tech space in general, there’s more demand than there is supply. Trying to constrain that to one particular geography makes that job even more difficult.”
He said the company chose Phoenix to expand its technology capabilities because its campus has enough space and Phoenix is a strong hub for IT companies.
“There’s at least 250 software development companies in there right now, and there’s also other multinational companies that house their IT staffs there,” Panisini said.
He also said Arizona State University and University of Arizona provide a strong talent pool. The company expects about 100 workers will relocate from Texas with hundreds more being hired from Arizona and other states.
