Ken Chenault will step down as the CEO of American Express early next year.
Chenault is one of only four African-American CEOs leading a Fortune 500 company. The number of CEOs of color was on the rise in 2001 when Chenault took over and reached a peak in 2007. But that momentum has seemingly stalled and the numbers have leveled off.
