Coyote And Fox Confirmed Rabid Along Superstition Trails

Hikers exploring the Superstition Mountains are being warned to watch out for rabid wild animals.

The Pinal County Health Department has confirmed at least two animals recently tested positive for rabies.

Park rangers called for testing after "they'd seen dead foxes near the trails," said Joe Pyritz with the Pinal County Health Department.

While looking at the animals' carcasses, he said, "they saw one fox run crazily down the trails. Another two animals were captured and found to have rabies."

He confirmed one infected animal was a fox, the other a coyote.

Pyritz said visitors to the mountain range need to keep their pets on leashes and anyone bitten by an animal should seek immediate medical attention.
