In total, the Department Of Justice is giving out more than $98 million through its Community Oriented Policing Services or COPS Hiring Program.
The DOJ said departments will use the money to hire 802 new police officers for three years.
Tucson and Sahuarita were the only police departments in Arizona to receive funding for a total of four new officers.
In a press release, the DOJ said additional points were given to departments applying for the money if they “certified their willingness to cooperate with federal immigration authorities within their detention facilities.”
DOJ defined that cooperation as "providing access to detention facilities for an interview of aliens in the jurisdiction’s custody and providing advance notice of an alien’s release from custody upon request."
The DOJ said 80 percent of the departments that got the grant made such an agreement.
