A minority owner of the Chinese Cultural Center in Phoenix is trying to keep the Chinese Cultural Center building looking like a Chinese Cultural Center. It's continuing its quest to prevent the majority owner from removing the building’s roof.
The minority owner is CJ Design and Construction Corporation. Last week, it had a setback. A Maricopa County judge said the building’s majority owner can go ahead and remove the roof, starting next Monday, Dec. 11.
CJ Design and Construction filed a motion asking the judge to reconsider. It’s also filing an official appeal, according to its attorney, Jack Wilenchik.
“We got to fight to get this very quickly, or at least to get the Court of Appeals to stop anything from happening on Monday,” Wilenchik said. He called the roof “irreplaceable” and said it’s made of materials that are no longer available.
Meanwhile, Jason Rose, spokesman for 668 North LLC, the majority owner, considers the matter settled.
“The debate [is] largely resolved, at least on the legal front,” he said. “And it’s time to move forward now that key legal issues have been resolved.”
Rose said they’ll work with their contractors to figure out when the best time is to start construction work.
