ASU Team Develops Family Bereavement Program For Kids, Surviving Parent

For decades, researchers have been exploring ways to understand how children are affected by the death of a parent — and how those children and their surviving parent move forward, even as they’re dealing with grief. One of the leaders in the field has been Irwin Sandler, research professor in Psychology at ASU.

He and a team developed the Family Bereavement Program, a 12-session program designed to promote resilience for the children and the surviving parent. The program is being expanded nationally, as Sandler and colleagues recently completed a 15-year follow-up with people who’ve been through it.

Sandler is here to talk about his research.
