Goodyear is ready to invest millions of dollars into a new central park. The fast-growing cityis hearing from residents on how to build it.
The city is having another public forum this week to get input on what locals want in their new park.
“Great parks and recreation systems not only help retain your current businesses and residents but they also help attract them as well,” said Nathan Torres, Goodyear's parks and recreation director.
Torres said the 86-acre campus will be completed in two phases. The first one will cost $32 million and include basic park amenities, plus a rec center and pool.
“It’s very rare to be able to provide this many amenities on one location to bring this together, and so we’re pretty excited about the opportunity this is going to bring our residents," Torres said.
This campus will add to Goodyear's 17 parks as it continues rapid growth.
The second phase of the park is to be determined, Torres said.
“That’s where you build in more of the regional type facilities," he said. "It could be an urban fishing lake, a large gathering area. It would just depend on what the public tells us in terms of their needs for Phase Two.”
The park will go in near Estrella Parkway and Yuma Road, and is scheduled to open in summer 2020.
Residents can go to the forum Thursday or submit comments on the city website online.
