Competition Looks To Add 50 Phoenix Bike Racks With Local Artists' Design

Fifty new bike racks are being added to downtown Phoenix, and local artists are invited to help design them.

Two winners will be chosen and each will receive a $4,000 prize. The winners’ designs will be showcased in the downtown area.

R.J. Price of Downtown Phoenix Inc. said the contest will “shine a spotlight” on the creativity of the community and fill a need for bike infrastructure.

“We need more bike lanes, and we need more bike racks, and we need more bike infrastructure, and you know this isn’t gonna solve all of our needs but I think it’s gonna be a really good start," Price said.

The deadline to apply for the contest is Dec. 18. A panel will select the winners from four finalists. Price said the downtown group plans to display the designs at the Art Detour 30 celebration in March.
