The wildfires that continue to cut through highly-populated areas near Los Angeles have residents concerned in the moment about their safety and what will happen to their homes and properties.
But there’s also worry about the dramatic worsening of air pollution which, while a fire is burning, can cause short-term breathing problems. The effects, though, can also be longer-lasting, including on the earth’s climate.
A recent study led by Rodney Weber at Georgia Tech found that the burning of trees can impact the sun’s rays by virtue of brown carbon.
