Even though voters moved to legalize the sale of marijuana for medical uses, one Mesa Republican wants to introduce legislation that would ban billboard advertising along roadways.
Arizona Sen. David Farnsworth said Senate Bill 1032 would make it a crime to advertise any drug illegal under federal law, which includes marijuana, along state roads. He would also like to make it illegal to promote the benefits of the drug or make claims about how legalization worked in other states.
"One in particular I saw that said in the state of Colorado since marijuana's been legalized there's been no increase in underage usage, or something like that, which, I think, is totally false," Farnsworth said.
At least two attorneys said that would likely be illegal because the state would be seeking to regulate an idea and not a product.
