Arizona Firefighters Could Be Battling California Wildfires Through Christmas

Arizona firefighters who were sent to help with California wildfires could come home on Monday or be stuck there through the holidays.

Tiffany Davila with the Arizona Department of Forestry said all Arizona crews are safe and their families understand that it’s part of the job.

“We want everyone to come home safely and get here right in time for Christmas," Davila said. "But if they’re out there, everybody understands that, and they’re making Arizona proud.”

Davila said most of the nearly 160 Arizona firefighters are working on the Thomas Fire, which has burned 252,000 acres in Southern California. She said they’re working on a variety of assignments, such as structure protection and digging lines.

Senior field correspondent Bridget Dowd has a bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
