Pioneer Park in Mesa opened in 1956, but underwent a $7.9 million renovation this year. The historic site hosted a grand re-opening on Saturday.
Renovations for the 9,000 square foot park began in June.
Aimee Manis is with Mesa’s parks and recreation department. She said they’ve added more lighting to extend the hours that children and their families can play.
“In Arizona, with our summer weather, it’s very hard to stay outside when it’s so hot and sunny," Manis said. "But once the sun goes down that’s when people want to come out and play. So we’re going to encourage that by having a well-lit friendly environment."
Manis said the play structures are ADA compliant with a 500 foot elevated walkway for wheelchairs. Park goers can also enjoy a 15-foot-high water wall that is the first of its kind in Arizona.
A ribbon cutting ceremony took place Saturday afternoon, with appearances from Mesa Mayor John Giles and even Santa Claus.
