Maricopa County Gears Up For Special Election

The Maricopa County Elections Department is hard at work preparing for an upcoming special election, as the registration deadline is Jan. 29.

When Congressman Trent Franks quit before his term was over, county officials went straight to work getting materials ready for the special election.

As County Recorder Adrian Fontes said on Arizona Horizon, staff members are playing catch-up because they didn’t get a lot of notice.

“It’s really tight and you know at the elections department right now we’re like ducks on a pond," Fontes said. "It’s nice and smooth on top, but we’re paddling like crazy underneath.”

Fontes said they’re working to make sure there are enough polling places in both the primary and general elections.

The primary is Feb. 27 and the general election will be held April 24.

Fontes said voters should return their early ballots as soon as possible to make for a smooth election.
