Alleged Mastermind Behind Journalist’s Murder Gets Arrested

Miroslava Breach
Jorge Valencia
Miroslava Breach, a correspondent for the national Mexican newspaper La Jornada, was gunned down outside her home in Mexico's northern state of Chihuahua, authorities said. Breach had written extensively about drug trafficking and corruption in the state.

MEXICO CITY — The assassinations of journalists in Mexico this year have heightened concerns about the country’s freedom of the press. And although most of the murders are still unsolved, one perpetrator might be brought to justice soon.

Mexican authorities arrested the alleged mastermind behind the murder of journalist Miroslava Breach, shot last March.

Breach covered organized crime, mostly in the state of Chihuahua. Her death reignited the fight to protect journalists in Mexico.

Javier Corral, governor of Chihuahua, announced that Juan Carlos Moreno Ochoa — also known as “Larry” — was captured Monday morning in the state of Sonora. “Larry” is accused of being part of the Sinaloa Cartel.

Corral also stated that last week in Sonora, authorities found the body of Ramón Andrés Zavala, the suspected triggerman who killed Breach.
