After police broke up a so-called “street feeding” event in Phoenix over the weekend, nonprofits are wondering how future conflict can be avoided.
The Human Services Campus in South Phoenix has several services for the homeless all in one place.
“On the campus we offer three meals a day, 365 days a year,” said Allegra Fullerton, a public affairs consultant for the HSC. “There is no shortage of food for people who are experiencing homelessness.”
But groups outside the HSC want to help, too. On Saturday, police forced a “street feeding” event to close. Fullerton said the HSC didn’t call the police. She cautioned, however, that free food needs to be made safely, in a licensed kitchen.
Fullerton said she believes the HSC and outside groups can work together in the future. “It’s just a matter of making contact, following up and inviting them in.”
At least one group the HSC reached is scheduled to do an event at Andre House, one of the non-profits located at the Campus. The HSC is south of Madison Street and west of 9th Avenue in Phoenix.
