Maricopa County Shelters Full After New Year's Eve Holiday

Maricopa County animal shelters are at full capacity following the New Year’s Eve holiday. Jose Santiago is with Maricopa County Animal Care and Control. He says they’ve taken in almost 350 lost and stray dogs since Tuesday.

"We see a big influx of this right after July 4 weekend — same thing with New Year’s Eve," Santiago said. "The dogs are spooked by the loud noises. They’re not used to something like that. They either jump a fence or they crawl under a fence."

Santiago said it’s important to get your animals microchipped so they can be safely returned home.
