After a woman was shot and killed by a stray bullet while visiting a desert area near Buckeye, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has taken steps to ensure better public safety.
A BLM spokeswoman said in a statement that the agency has recently increased law enforcement patrols in the area due to the high volume of shooters using the site, as well as in response to reports that some shooters were vandalizing nearby utility lines.
They’re also pursuing a temporary closure of the area, which is popular with target shooters. It is legal to shoot on large swaths of U.S.-owned land in Arizona.
Police on Monday announced the death of 24-year-old Kami Gilstrap of Goodyear.
Buckeye police spokeswoman Detective Tamela Skaggs said Gilstrap was with family members at the shooting area Sunday when she was struck. She was flown by helicopter to a hospital but later died.
