One of South Mountain’s most popular trailheads reopens Saturday, Jan. 20. The Pima Canyon Trailhead area has been closed for renovations since August.
The trailhead now features upgraded restrooms and additional parking spaces. Gregg Bach is with the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department. He said this is just the start of five years of improvements to South Mountain Park and Preserve, the country’s largest of its kind.
“The preserve turns 100 years old in 2024 and we like to tell people we’re getting it ready for another 100 years,” Bach said. “So with four years left in that project, counting some of the other things we have going on right now, it’ll be over $23 million that we’re going to put into renovating a variety of areas in the preserve."
Bach said the funding for the project comes from the Phoenix Parks and Preserve Initiative, a voter-approved sales tax.
