Languages continue to disappear around the world, with experts saying one vanishes almost every 10 days. A number of those are indigenous North American languages.
A recently released study indicates there could be a new way to preserve a language — and it’s similar to how researchers explore how to save certain species. Those researchers are ranking endangered languages as applied via an acronym called EDGE, which combines evolutionary distinctiveness with global endangerment.
Nicolas Perrault is co-author of the study, "Tongues on the EDGE: Language preservation priorities based on threat and lexical distinctiveness," and is currently a grad student at Oxford. He joins The Show's Steve Goldstein to talk about it.
