A state lawmaker wants to give Arizona voters a chance to decide if the current $10.50 an hour minimum wage is as high as it should go. Despite the fact they voted to push it to $12 an hour by 2020.
Republican Sylvia Allen said her proposal would not repeal what voters approved in 2016. Instead, it would block future increases. It would also reverse a provision that requires employers to provide at least three days of paid sick leave.
Allen said mandating a wage hike was quote “an immoral thing.”
Yet the state’s economy is improving, despite some dire predictions about the wage hike.
"The market is starting to improve because of the great things that President Trump has been doing," Allen said. "And it is improving. But there's still people out there who are struggling within their own business."
An opponent of the measure chided Allen and her colleagues saying, it’s sad that Republicans would put the will of the Chamber of Commerce above voters. He also criticized the legislature for spending time on undoing something that voters already approved.
