A solar plant on the Navajo Nation will be expanding soon. An agreement signed Friday, Jan. 26, will provide more renewable energy to the community and pave the way for future renewable energy projects.
The Navajo Tribal Utility Authority and Salt River Project officials signed a long-term solar agreement. This means the existing Kayenta Solar Facility will double in size.
Patty Garcia-Likens is with SRP. She said this also calls for SRP to work with NTUA to explore other ways to provide renewable energy to the area.
"The Navajo Nation has made a commitment to look and explore ways to provide electricity and to create an industry for themselves,” Garcia-Likens said. “So they have jobs there and they have revenue from this industry."
Garcia-Likens said this is just the start of at least 500 megawatts of renewable energy projects over the next five to 10 years with the Navajo Nation.
