A new health clinic in the West Valley broke ground on Monday. The new clinic, at Grand Avenue and Cotton Crossing in Peoria, will open in 2020. It will house primary care services and several specialities, including behavioral health care.
Carol Olson, chair of the Psychiatry Department for the publicly-owned Maricopa Integrated Health System, said the area needs more mental health services.
"If they’re a patient [with] your regular old kind of commercial insurance, it can be extremely difficult to find a psychiatrist in the West Valley," she said.
Olson hopes the new clinic will reduce stigma around mental health care, because patients can go to the same building that has their regular doctor.
Funding for the clinic comes from $70 million in bonds. In 2014, Maricopa County voters approved a $935 million bond issue for various health care projects.
