Nikola Motor Company, which makes electric semi-trucks, announced Tuesday that it has chosen Buckeye as the location for its headquarters and manufacturing operation.
The headquarters and manufacturing operations will create 2,000 jobs for the area.
The 500 acres Nikola Motor will develop on were given for free by the company who owns them, and the city of Buckeye plans to provide incentives. That includes rebates for the building permit fees and just under half of the sales tax generated, mostly from construction — altogether, that could cost the city nearly $5 million.
Nikola Motor chose Buckeye after a year of searching and looking at 30 different site locations.
The 1 million-square-foot facility will be zero emissions.
Buckeye Economic Development Director David Roderique said this is a big deal for a largely bedroom community.
“This is really significant," Roderique said. "We have about 12,000 jobs total in the entire city today, so adding 2,000 more jobs is a big percentage boost with one single company.”
Nikola Motor says it chose Buckeye for its location and pro-business environment.
