Breaking from Republican leadership, Majority Whip Kelly Townsend said Wednesday she will vote to expel Rep. Don Shooter if he doesn’t resign.
Townsend cited the report that came found a pattern of inappropriate conduct from the Yuma Republican against fellow lawmakers.
“I emphatically call upon representative Shooter to resign immediately,” Townsend said.
In a brief speech on the House floor, Townsend said that Shooter’s actions have created a hostile working environment.
“I make this in the spirit of prevention to spare our colleagues certain unpleasantry of having to vote for further action, which will most certainly fracture and stain this House,” she said.
If Shooter does not resign, Townsend said she will move to expel him Thursday. He declined to comment to reporters.
Townsend’s call comes after House Speaker J.D. Mesnard said he would move to censure Shooter.
