Arizona Lawmaker Wants To Ban Display Of Disparaging Native American Sports Logos, Names

A Native American lawmaker wants to ban the display of the name or logo of a sports team if any of the state's 22 tribes finds it disparaging.

The house bill was introduced by Democratic Rep. Eric Descheenie.

The measure, which is aimed at the Washington Redskins, would keep that word and their logo from being displayed anywhere in or around any publicly funded stadium.

"Fans can continue to wear, display and say what they want, irrespective of HB 2499," Descheenie said. "The Washington NFL football team can do the same. This bill begins and ends with government facilities."

But it’s not just the University of Phoenix where the Cardinals play that could be affected if the bill becomes law. Other facilities including Chase Field, various spring training sites and any facility at or operated by the state's three universities or community colleges, could also be impacted.
