Refugee Women Open Global Market In Downtown Phoenix

A new pop up shop opens Friday in downtown Phoenix providing unique opportunities for the community.

The Global Market is run by women who arrived in Phoenix as refugees with no material possessions. But they brought their cooking, crafting and sewing skills.

And now, their creations are for sale at CityScape.

The suite on the southeast corner of Central Avenue and Washington Street was donated to the group through February.

A collaboration between the women, nonprofits and Arizona State University graduate students led to the pop up shop.

Phoenix Vice Mayor Laura Pastor helped the group test the pop up market inside the lobby of city hall during a one-day preview sale last December.

While the women will learn how to manage a store, organizers hope shoppers will learn more about the people behind the products.
