Saying warning signs and detection systems may not be the right answer, a state lawmaker has a more radical approach to stopping wrong-way drivers.
State Rep. Michelle Ugenti-Rita wants to install spikes that “shred the vehicle tires of any wrong-way driver.”
The House bill comes amid what appears to be an increase in wrong way drivers.
In 2016, the Arizona Department of Public Safety responded to more than 1,600 incidents. In 2017, the agency responded to more than 1,780.
The Arizona Department of Transportation has taken steps to deter wrong way drivers by installing large warning signs.
The agency also installed an infrared detection system along sections of Interstate 17, but Ugenti-Rita has concerns
"I just don't think they're very practical and economical," she said. "It's a very expensive endeavor."
No hearing has been set for her legislation.
