What Is TPS And What Does Status Mean?

The Department of Homeland Security late last month renewed Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, for another 18 months for Syrians living with that designation in the U.S.

The Trump administration has ended TPS for citizens of El Salvador and Haiti. We’ve been hearing quite a bit about this program over the past several months, but what is it, and what does this status confer?

To get a sense of what that designation actually means and how the feds decide whether or not to extend it, I spoke with Cecilia Menjivar, co-director of the Center for Migration Research at the University of Kansas.
