In Wake Of Larry Nassar Scandal, Michigan State University President Resigns

Former U.S. gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar is beginning his life behind bars in a Tucson federal prison this week. He was sentenced to up to 175 years after more than 150 women testified in court that he sexually abused them.

Before his abuse came to light, Nassar was also an associate professor at at Michigan State University, where the U.S. gymnastics team trained. And in the wake of the scandal, Michigan State President Lou Anna Simon resigned. She had been criticized for mishandling the crisis.

And that was the right thing to do, according to James C. Garland. He’s the former president of Miami University in Ohio, and he recently wrote a piece for the Chronicle of Higher Education about the university president’s role in any scandal like this. And he joins us via Skype.
