A bipartisan bill in Arizona’s House of Representatives aims to update the state’s non-discrimination laws to include protections for sexual orientation and gender identity in housing, employment and public accommodations.
Recent polls from OH Predictive Insights and ONE Community Foundation show that a majority of Arizonans support the bill.
Angela Hughey is the co-founder and president of ONE Community, a member-based coalition that promotes diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
“It’s important that we educate Arizonans and the business community,” Hughey said. “In over 60 percent of the state of Arizona, it is not illegal to fire someone, deny them service, or discriminate in housing, simply if you are gay or transgender.”
A poll of 400 likely general election voters found that over 70 percent of respondents favor policies that protect against discrimination. Another poll of over 400 self-identified conservatives found that over 55 percent of respondents favor the same policies.
