A 2015 U.S. Supreme Court ruling is changing how Valley cities regulate signs.
Mesa residents have a chance to weigh in on proposed changes to city code Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the community room of Fire Station 201, 360 E. 1st St.
Mesa’s sign code update is the most substantial proposed since it was first adopted in 1986. Peoria, Chandler and Surprise are among the other Valley cities that have reviewed their laws. The Mesa update regulates most signs based on size, type and quantity. Residents can view the draft online.

Among the proposed changes are limiting the number of flagpoles allowed per property and expanding where murals can be painted.
The Supreme Court ruled in favor of a Gilbert church that was cited for placing signs advertising services too early. The decision limits government's ability to regulate signs based on content.
Mesa City Council is expected to approve the final code this summer.
