Two southern Arizona lawmakers are trying to salvage legislation that would help teachers pay for classroom supplies.
HB 2377 would provide cash from the state treasury and a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for out-of-pocket expenses.
The legislation is sponsored by Republican Rep. Todd Clodfelter and Democratic Rep. Kirsten Engel.
Their colleagues voted against the measure last week. But they have a chance for a new vote if they make changes before March 8.
Some lawmakers think it’s not enough and the state needs to find more funding for education.
"I find a little frustration in that because it's at least something coming back, rather than nothing," Clodfelter said. "And, unfortunately until we come up with a way to give them more money, it's going to be either an all or none kind of a proposition. And I would rather take a little, rather than none myself."
He said it's an opportunity to give the teachers money back that they're already spending and then give them an opportunity to get more back from the tax credit.
